Packing can be difficult at the best of times, but when it comes to particularly fragile items, packing for your move can be a bit of a nightmare. It can be tempting at this stage to think that, as you’re so close to the finish line, it might be worth picking up the pace a little. However, although this might save time in the short term, you could end up with broken possessions when you reach your new home – something you definitely want to avoid!
So, to help you navigate this tricky problem, this month, the team at Barnes of Lincoln will be offering some advice on how to pack different fragile items for your move.
Plates
These can be particularly annoying fragile items to pack, mainly because you will have so many of them! But, if done properly, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Firstly, you will want to wrap each plate individually with newspaper or, ideally, bubble wrap, and then secure it with tape. Once you’ve done this, it’s time to stack them. The first thing to keep in mind here, is never to stack your plates horizontally inside the box. Even if you think this will save room given the box’s shape, increasing the surface area will ultimately increase the risk of your plates breaking in transit.
When you’ve finished stacking your plates, fill in the remaining space with either crumpled newspaper, an old t shirt or packing peanuts, but remember never to overfill any boxes – this is a surefire way to damage your items!
Glassware
One problem with packing glasses is that they tend to be all different shapes and sizes, meaning that it’s difficult to create hard and fast packing rules for them. However, there are some general measures you can put in place.
Firstly, like the plates, wrap each glass in newspaper, tucking it inside the glass too. Since glasses tend to be quite heavy when they’re stacked, it could help to use a double-walled box for extra protection. Don’t be afraid to layer the box too, this will help you make each box go the extra mile.
Awkwardly shaped items
For abnormally shaped items, begin as normal by wrapping in newspaper and then taping. Once done, wrap them once more in bubble wrap, and cover any jutting edges and angles with foam coverings to keep the item, and those handling it, safe.
With awkward items, it’s more important than ever to ensure the remaining space is filled with any packing materials you think will secure it. Otherwise, you run the risk of the item rattling around in the box and breaking.
