In this article, we’ll take a look at some of those objects, outlining what you shouldn’t put into self storage.
Tyres
This object is certainly worth flagging up as a no-no for self storage, mainly because you wouldn’t necessarily think that tyres can’t be stowed away in this manner. Most storage companies will refuse all storage requests for tyres, largely because if the tyres are left for long periods of time, they will need to be disposed of. The problem with this, however, is that it costs a lot of money, and the storage company is usually stung with the bill!
Flammable and hazardous materials
For health and safety reasons, all flammable, combustible, toxic and hazardous materials must never be put into self storage. This is because, if left unattended, it puts anyone who has to go in to remove the materials at a serious risk. Here’s a list, although not completely exhaustive, of the materials which should not go into self storage:
- Compressed gas
- Propane tanks
- Motor oil
- Acids
- Corrosives
- Paint
- Fertilisers
- Cleaners
- Fireworks
- Asbestos
Food
Although it may seem obvious, no perishable foods should ever be put into self storage, since it’s highly likely that the rotting remains will eventually attract pests. That said, some food is allowed into storage, namely, canned foods. This is because they tend not to expire for years, and their metal shell guards against pests.
Plants
Although your garden might be looking a little full, don’t be tempted to store surplus plants in self storage. The lack of sunlight and water will mean that the plants will die rather quickly and, more importantly, they too will be likely to attract a number of pests to the storage unit.
Cash and securities
Self storage should not be confused with security centres and safety deposit boxes. Although you can store things such as furniture, leaving cash in self storage is dangerous and would only attract criminals to the area.
