Planning a move abroad can be a stressful task and there is often apprehension with regards to how you’ll adjust to life once you arrive in your new home. With Easter coming up however, there is the opportunity to get settled into your new home country by utilising the holiday period. Whether you’re moving to Europe or further afield, you could find ample opportunity to integrate you and your family into new surroundings.
You might think that by moving overseas you may lose the tradition of Easter but whether you’re going to France, Italy, Greece or Australia, your overseas move won’t disappoint.
France
As a Roman-Catholic country you can rest assured that the French take Easter just as seriously as we do – if not more so! Families unite and ceremonies are held across the country, while the bells are held silent until Easter Sunday when they celebrate. There are a range of Easter markets and even egg hunts for the kids, so there will be plenty to keep the whole family occupied and happy.
With all of this on offer, a move to France could be ideal – it’s close by as well, making the journey short and reducing the feeling of moving far away for your family.
Australia
For many people Australia is the dream move, so you’ll be pleased to learn that our Aussie cousins also like to celebrate Easter. They have all the same traditional stuff like chocolate, Hot Cross buns and family gatherings, but one big difference is that they use an Easter Bilby instead of a Bunny. A Bilby is a small native mammal which is endangered, Australian companies use Easter to raise awareness and money in the aid of conserving this creature.
Flights naturally take longer for an overseas move as opposed to European moves but it’s a popular destination so you shouldn’t be stuck for flights. While it may be Spring here it’s Autumn in Australia – you won’t experience the warmest weather Australia has to offer but it isn’t cold either, so you should adjust to the season quite easily.
Canada
As a western country and not too far removed from us the Canadians also celebrate Easter. They have the same amount of festivities and even put on parades with floats in some neighbourhoods. For the kids there are traditional Easter egg hunts, so you can be sure of plenty of ways in which to take your mind off the move and onto living life.
Something worth noting which is different in Canada for Easter is that they don’t take the Easter Monday off – shops are still open and it’s a normal day. But don’t worry, they do get the Good Friday off!
Germany
In close proximity to us Germany is a relatively easy move and they share the same Easter traditions as us, having both the Friday and the Monday as holiday time which is spent with friends and family. With the winter over, Germany welcomes in Spring with eggs and bunnies as well as with fairs and markets.
Clearly there is a great deal of similarity which gives you both the opportunity to integrate without losing the tradition of Easter and the time with holidays to get unpacked and organised once you arrive.
